Bristol Sailing Association Secretary: Mr T S Playle, 3 Iddesleigh Road, Redland, BRISTOL, BS6 6YL Phone: 0117 973 8855 E-mail: jockplayle3@waitrose.com February 26, 2008 Dear Member As the February meeting was a purely social event, with no announcements or reports, this is a short newsletter for February 2008. We welcome new members Steve and Anita Freestone. The social evening on February 11th, with jazz band and buffet, was very successful. The buffet was organised by John Robinson, and thanks are due to John, Claire Tuner, Liz Freeman, Marion Brown, Malcolm Price, Jon Wood and Bill Thomas for preparing the food. The excellent music was provided by Tom Whittingham' "Alice's Wonderland Jazz Band" who play regularly at BCC's Sunday jazz nights on board "Sabrina". The next meeting will be held on MONDAY MARCH 10th 2008 on board "Sabrina 6" at her berth by Redcliffe Bridge. At this meeting we hope to plan our sailing for the season, so bring your diaries, and suggestions for weekend and longer sailing trips. We may need to plan and book well in advance this year - I have heard from Liberty Yachts in Plymouth that they are already fully booked for the early May Bank Holiday. Gordon Ogden has booked the PYC yacht "Spellbinder" for a midweek sail on Monday March 17th - Wednesday 19th with some of our new members in the crew. There is one place still available; will anyone who would like to take this place please contact Gordon (01275 462473) or me. The committee and skippers met on February 18th to plan an outline sailing programme for the year. Full details will be given at the next meeting and in the March newsletter, but the following possibilities were discussed (skipper's name first) - please let us know at the March meeting if you are interested in any of them. * Alan Howells: Cowes - St Malo race; catamaran long weekend early June; weekend from Plymouth in September. * Phil Steeele: "Solent Quest" (Sunsail weekend) if any interest; several weekend and midweek trips; Mediterranean 2 weeks in September, possibly Turkey. * Chris Watts: week starting in Guernsey on September 5th, flying from Bristol (boat Sun Odyssey 40 £1700, flights £50 each way, so about £350 per person); weekend on PYC boat. * Gordon Ogden: Summer cruise on PYC "Spellbinder" if based in Plymouth at any time; Mediterranean cruise in September; winter midweek sailing in Solent. * Dave Lloyd: ad hoc weekends (not Bank Holidays). * Martin Woollett: Any weekend, south coast (not Plymouth). * Dave Price: weekend any time if available. * One member has requested a week in France/Channel Islands July 27 - August 1. Any others interested (including skipper)? PTO As well as the above members may be interested in a weekend of not too serious racing from Penzance to the Scilly Isles and back, with a free day in Scilly, July 25th - 28th, run by Penzance Sailing Club. Tall Ships Adventures is offering 15% discount to our members for any of their voyages, from day sails to Atlantic crossings, on the square rigger "Stavros Niarchos" and also now on 72' Challenger yachts. Best wishes Jock Playle
